Many of us aspire to retire early, but only some accomplish that goal. The things we do in our professional lives are often driven by the age in which we retire. For Hassan and Dennie, retiring early was made possible by savvy decisions that put them in the position they dreamed about for their entire lives.
We can have everything perfectly planned and ready to go, and then disaster strikes. When we least expect it, an emergency situation can present itself, causing us to rethink everything we thought we knew and challenge our assumptions about how we can power through and reach a positive resolution. Two years ago, Dave was applying for a reverse mortgage loan when his community was hit by devastating fires, leaving his neighborhood susceptible to landslides.
Everyone’s path to retirement is different. There’s no such thing as an identical, repeatable retirement plan. In Ann’s retirement journey, she realized that some changes needed to happen with her house. Her home was getting worse with time and, in Ann’s words, “everything needed to be done.” In addition, she also had to help clear out belongings from her parents, two sets of grandparents, and cousins. Every room was filled with things that they left behind. Ann felt she had a few options and likely had to sell the place.
A love of art has driven Steven to focus on what matters most to him and his wife. After a successful career practicing real estate and business law, Steven was beginning to feel slightly slighted that time was passing by so quickly, that he may not be able to do everything he wanted to. At the age of 75, Steven had developed a new hobby of practicing art, which was pulling at his heart while putting a new perspective on his priorities.
Being able to experience the great outdoors on his terms is Ron’s greatest joy. As a semi-retired accountant, Ron has been living in the home he shared with his wife for over 35 years in the San Fernando Valley. “She wanted this house, and now it has made me over a million bucks!” Eight years after losing his wife, Ron had finally accepted that she is not coming back and wanted to move on with his life and focus on his finances.

It was a very pleasant experience. At first we were kind of intimidated when the sales person briefed us on the volume of documents, and whether we could sign them from home. He explained how that could be done. When the document came up, he guided through the process very professionally, very patiently. If he could not answer the question we had he would get back to us in a timely manner — he was very punctual and very understanding, did a fine job explaining the process, the financial end, the benefits, and prepared us for the closing. At no time did he exhibit any pressure, but explained the options and the benefits.
